Closed Issue: Removed Devices Still Appear on Desktop [15006]

In Windows 7, Ghostbuster removed a ghosted USB drive. It no longer appears in the Ghostbuster device list, Device Manager, or in the registry. However, a drive icon for it persists in the Computer folder. Any thoughts on how to remove the icon from the UI?

A ghosted device does not have a drive icon unless there is something wrong with it (like you still have files open on the drive). So this is not an issue of GhostBuster but Windows (or another app).

Process Explorer of the Sysinternals Suite lets you search for such files and shows the process keeping the file open.

Seen in autoruns that some devices can be present but drivers are not there anymore (this happens for instance with Microsoft Security Essentials). These devices have an yellow exclaimation mark but are not ghosted.

So a check for the actual device driver file could be added and bulk removal of those devices could be enabled.

There is no option yet to filter on description. Perhaps I should combine device and description column into a single one (by using the description if possible).

I downloaded the most recent version of GhostBuster (on 22 Jan 2011). Running Win 7 US version with UAE disabled. When I run the app, It lists OK and Ghosted devices fine. However, I cannot check any items whatsoever. I am running in administrator mode.

To be honoust, I do not think most users will set the environment variable to see them. But I wrote ghostbuster it because it saved me lots of time cleaning up and it certainly improves startup performance. Besides that it was a nice way to dive into the setupapi stuff once more.

They key driver behind the number of downloads is that you have begun to create something that fills a void in the current Windows Device Manager. Why Device Manager doesn't provide a mechanism for uninstalling devices without the device attached is puzzling from an operational standpoint. So in that regard the project's potential audience could be a 50/50 split between techies and non-techies due to the nature of the need. Maybe Raymund Chin will blog about why devices can't be uninstalled when not present.

Btw the reason why I show all devices is to let one configure the UI even when there are no ghosted devices. It also shows you where ghosted devices are numerous.

Besides that the tool isn't ment for the 'stupid' user because it can cause many problems when operated without understanding what you're doing.

I agree, I wrote the tool primary for myself and still am suprised by the number of download. As soon as I have some spare time I will do a make-over of the UI and make some decent manual.

I see. The issue is that non-technical users (assuming you wish to have the project grow) will not understand based on the GUI feedback they are being presented. Additionally technical users, who understand the seriousness of devices and their ability to hose an OS, will also balk until they read the code and see that it does in fact only execute against ghosted devices.

Since there isn't a distinction between duplicate device names in the listing I would suggest a GUI change that shows the single device name with a qty of ghosted and a qty of non-ghosted. The use of class as a grouping is good and is already a single entry.

The idea is to create a filter on names and classes.
Ghostbuster will only remove those devices that are marker AND ghosted. It wil not delete non ghosted devices or devices marked as service.

It will not remove drivers or inffiles either, just uninstall the device.

Is there a way to specify a device such that the non-ghosted device is not selected but the ghosted device(s) is selected?

In the attached screenshot "Generic PnP Monitor" is an example where one is ghosted and one is not. I would want to remove the ghosted device but not the OK device.

And maybe once I click the Remove Ghosts button I'll find out that it skips OK devices in the selection but when dealing with things of this nature it must be crystal clear.

Hi,

You cannot check directly as the devices change when re-enumerated. Ghostbuster works by right-clicking an item and chosing either add device or add class. Add device will select all devices that match name and remove those of the selection that are ghosted.

The class menu item works similar on the whole class (like Usb devices).

The checkboxes are present but non functional (the selection is done with coloring).
